Taming the Runaway Problem of Inflationary Landscapes
A wide variety of vacua, and their cosmological realization, may provide an explanation for the apparently anthropic choices of some parameters of particle physics and cosmology. If the probability on various parameters is weighted by volume, a flat potential for slow-roll inflation is also naturally understood, since the flatter the potential the larger the volume of the sub-universe. However,...

متن کاملMinima in Branching Random Walks
Given a branching random walk, let Mn be the minimum position of any member of the n’th generation. We calculate EMn to within O(1) and prove exponential tail bounds for P {|Mn − EMn| > x}, under quite general conditions on the branching random walk. In particular, together with work of [8], our results fully characterize the possible behavior of EMn when the branching random walk has bounded b...
متن کاملFinding Minima in Complex Landscapes: Annealed, Greedy and Reluctant Algorithms
We consider optimization problems for complex systems in which the cost function has a multivalleyed landscape. We introduce a new class of dynamical algorithms which, using a suitable annealing procedure coupled with a balanced greedy-reluctant strategy drive the systems towards the deepest minimum of the cost function. Results are presented for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model of spin-glasses.
متن کاملModel-Based Search to Determine Minima in Molecular Energy Landscapes
Search for the global minimum in a molecular energy landscape populated with numerous local minima is a difficult task. Search techniques relevant to such complex spaces can be classified as either global or local. Global search explores the entire space, guaranteeing the global extremum will be found. To accomplish this, the number of samples required grows exponentially with the number of dim...
